This is one of my favorite quilts that I have made in quite awhile. My Mom gave me a few of her hand rusted fabrics. It took me quite awhile to piece this top. The quilting was done one section at a time – some days only one square was accomplished. I used a double batting for this quilt – cotton on the bottomed then a thin polyester on top. The texture is beautiful.
Bits & Pieces
Alcohol Ink Art
We redecorated our boy’s room this summer. It desperately needed to be painted and updated. Adding interesting art is always fun- but being able to do it yourself is awesome. I spent quite a bit of time researching online how to work with alcohol inks and decided to use the glass, alcohol and fire technique. My son really likes rocks and I think that these look like some of his geodes.
What I really liked about this technique is if I hated it I could just soak the glass with rubbing alcohol and wipe it off.
Beginning something new – Gordon’s Quilt
My friend Jackie hired me to do a commission quilt for her “adopted” son. This young man’s 25th birthday was the beginning of September. She gave me a few ideas, colors (blue and grey) and a budget. I started by doing a mock-up that helped me with the color selection and basic layout. Jackie was not too sure about the yellow at first but she let me make the final color choices.
Quilting for Bernice – Overall Sam
When Bernice dropped this quilt off, I did not open it out all the way until I was ready to load it on the long-arm. I was pleasantly surprised with the Overall Sam appliqué blocks. It did however change my whole thoughts for quilting.
I really like the secondary design of the quilting. Putting a quilted “square” behind the appliqué add another layer to the quilt.
Green and Cream Vintage Quilt – Quilting for Mom
My Mom finds beautiful vintage quilt tops and then lets me quilt them. I love these old tops and it is so fun for me to be able to quilt them. I try to stay traditional with the style of quilting that I put with these old tops. I really wanted to challenge myself to keeping the quilting looser on this top and not using any dense fills. I like the combination of the feathers in the center with the “peacock” fill in the borders.
