New iPad sleeves and Quilts for sale

Published on 06/24/11

I have had fun making a few new IPad sleeves lately. I added them into my store.

I also am making some of my quilts and bags available for sale. Most of these quilts are small which allows me to try out new techniques. They can be found in our online store.

Here are two of the new quilts added. I am also going to make the “fractured” quilts available. If they all sell out before I do my program – well, I guess I will just have to make some more.

4 year blog-versary

Published on 06/10/11

I can’t believe that it has already been 4 years. Where has the time gone? I feel like I am such a different person now – I guess when we are able to look back and see what we were working on and what held our interest then, it shows us how much we grow and change.

What I love the most about quilt blogs, is that it is not just about the projects, but about our lives. I love seeing all the gardens, recipes, and pictures children (grandchildren). I think our quilts hold stories for each phase of life and I love learning each of these stories.

In celebration of this anniversary, I am going to give away a quilted iPad sleeve to the first person who leaves a comment. Thanks for being interested in my quilt stories.

Fractured quilts 4 and 5

Published on 06/09/11

For these 2 quilts I used the same fabric. It is a wonderful teddy bear fabric with repeats that would be great for borders. I was wondering if using a design with a very linear pattern would work. I definitely had to cut and sew carefully to get the design to line up correctly. Of the two quilts, the first (with the tree) is my favorite.

Fractured quilts 2 and 3

Published on 06/09/11

To get the whole story on the fractured quilts see the previous post. The second fabric I used was very subtle. I actually cut it into the 4 – 4 1/2 inch squares, just as the pattern had instructed. It makes the finished squares about 3/4 inch. I have really worked on my piecing and pressing with this project. Since I usually do free-form curved piecing the 1/4 inch seam is really a pain, but I have a wonderful foot for my sewing machine with a guide that helps me a lot.

Notice the fracture is very soft.

The next fabric I used was cowboys with trucks. I did this with the larger blocks (9 inch) and really like the movement. I will put a block of the uncut fabric on the back.

Paper piecing project and new design

Published on 06/09/11

I have been having a great time sewing the past few days. My studio is a mess and that is fine for now – at least until Monday when I have another sewing class here. I was trying to piece at least 4 blocks on my paper piecing project – but got distracted this week. My Mom sent me some new pinks this week, which will be a big help. For some reason I do not buy many pinks. My bin of fabric scraps seems to be growing instead of shrinking.

My distraction has been fractured quilt designs. I have been obsessing (fretting) over what to do for a guild program. (Mind you, it is not until January, but I like to be prepared.) My type A personality can be a real pain sometimes. I was going to use the paper piece project, before that I was planning on hand piecing a piclke-dish pattern and letting everyone do it at the meeting. The thought of tracing and cutting out all those shapes…....oh well. I have decided on doing a program on fractured quilts. For the past 2 days I have been cutting and sewing, cutting and sewing. I have 5 small quilt tops already with ideas for at least 2 more, and I haven’t even broke a sweat. I have fabrics that have been waiting in my stash for years for such a time as this! (Really…..some of them I have had for at least 10 years.)

On to the quilts. I will not include all the pictures in this one post because it will take forever for them all to load, so I will break them up into several posts.

The first one I made is still my favorite. I found the pattern for this in my idea file. A friend had given me a copy of it after I commented on her amazing sunflower design. It was written by Terri Kirchner for American Quilter magazine (Summer 2006).

All the pieces cut and labeled. The pattern instructions were to use 4 – 4 1/2 in squares but I enlarged it to 9 inch squares and I am so glad that I did.

The giraffe was what I thought was going to be the focal point, but the elephant and zebra stand out the most. New attached image
