Bits & Pieces

Black and green modern quilt

This quilt was “born” from the leftovers of another project. I just could not trow away my left-overs and decided to piece then in long stripes. One of my favorite colors to use in quilts is black. I decided to cut the long strip in half and that would be the finished width of the quilt.

I used a bright green thread for some color pop – but mainly black thread that would add a lovely texture.

I love the simplicity of the design matched with the fun quilting designs. This was a definite street-reliever to work on when my real job (nursing) was very stressful.

New Bible bag

Published on 10/18/15

Each year for our Sunday School graduation I make the 3 years olds from our class a Bible bag. Our church buys them a new Bible and I make a fun/unique bag for them to carry their stuff in. I make the straps long enough to put over their head/shoulder to be worn across their body, so Mom does not have to carry it for them. This year I only had one moving up so I got to spend a little extra time on it. Since I have been in the process of Finishing up a turtle quilt – I had the turtle shape in my thought. It made the bag so cute! New attached image I use a heavy duty plastic zipper which makes it easy for little hand to zip and lasts longer. This bag is lined with purple fleece – her favorite color. Black Irish chain – customer quilt

This beautiful customer quilt was made as a wedding present fro her daughter. She is always good about giving me some ideas on what she wants done with the quilting. On this quilt she wanted some celtic designs and for it not to have heavy fills.

I spent some time researching celtic quilting designs and ended up ordering a few stencils for the large solid black shapes. I also ordered a pouncer with white chalk.

We decided to use a variegated thread for the colored blocks and a dark navy blue for the solid black areas. The backing was a dark blue batik. I had a little trouble getting the tension to balance with the batik backing but after so play time and a new needle it started working. New attached image I ended up using 2 different stencils for the black blocks because this was a king sized quilt and I knew that I would have problems with repeating the same pattern over and over…... The only downside with the color change of thread and the stencils is there were A TON of starts and stops.

I made the quilting in the border a little heavier because the border was a little fuller than it should have been. The denser quilting helped pull in some of the fabric. I also only used the navy thread in the border as the variegated thread was a little too loud for me in this area.

On a side note – you can see in picture below, I had some trouble removing the white marks. It stated that they should be steamed away but that was not my experience. I ended up straying them with water and scrubbing and they still did not completely remove. My hope is that they will with washing. I tried to not apply the pouncing chalk too heavy – but I did need to be able to see it. I will use it again on one of my own projects before using it on another customer quilt.

Progress on the pink turtle

The quilt is pieced and most of the quilting is done. I am in love with this turtle.

Vacation doodle

Published on 10/05/15

I was very good on our vacation this past summer and did not bring any projects that HAD to be done. All that I brought was a new sketch pad, pens and a few rulers. I had a few afternoons where I sat in the hammocks and worked on a doodle. It is not perfect but I do like it.
