Bits & Pieces

Working on the blocks and setting triangles – Cena’s quilt

Published on 05/06/14

The blocks turned out so pretty. The combination of the extra batting and tight quilting makes the appliqué look like trapunto work (nice loft behind the appliqué shapes).

The setting green/white triangles was quilted with a combination of geometric line quilting and curves – matching the thread to the color of the fabric. New attached image

Working on the blocks – Cena’s quilt

After stabilizing the blocks, I got to work on the details. I used a combination of straight stitch ruler work and stippling on the edge of the block. A beginning – Cena’s quilt

Published on 04/30/14

Just looking at this quilt loaded on the long arm makes me smile. We decided to use 2 layers of batting (cotton and polyester) so the quilting would pop.

This quilt is huge – 100 inches square. The borders are amazing with the beautiful appliqué in the 2 corners and LOTS of open space. The borders took several hours each as there was lots of ruler work and starts and stops. New attached image I took picture of one of the open corners, so that when I got to the opposite side of the quilt I could make it look the same without unrolling the top. New attached image

Quilting for others

Published on 04/28/14

Quilting is probably my favorite part of making quilts. Quilting for others is a little intimidating but so rewarding. Cena brought me a quilt that she had been working on off and on for 12 years. It is a beautiful appliqué quilt done in vibrant colors on a white background with lots of open space.

Planning the quilting for this quilt was important as I was on a tight deadline and I knew it was going to take a lot of time. Cena sent me a picture and I “visited” the quilt once before she brought it to me.

The day I got the quilt, I spend 7 hours marking the top – watched some great movies that day.

JoAnn’s Quilt

Published on 04/27/14

My friend JoAnn asked my to quilt a show quilt for her – and I was thrilled to be able to say yes.

I was a tight squeeze since I was working overtime and really only had the week to get it done. I picked a design that did not require many starts/stops but still highlighted her beautiful piecing.

I had never worked on a quilt – on the long arm- that had a flange. It took a little finagling but it ended up looking quite nice.

Most importantly – she loved it.
