Fun and Frenzy

The past few weeks have been full of activities. I had my first kid’s sewing class and it was so much fun. The girls all made a needle case and started their quilts by making a four patch block. The ages range form 7 to 11 years old. They were so surprised that it is ok to sew on paper!

I also have been preparing for a lecture on curved piecing to give at the Flying Needles Quilt Guild in Niceville, Florida. My daughter is going to come along for the day. Mark and I have been working at a feverish pace in order to get four patterns ready to take. Scott, at Digital Now in Pensacola, was a huge help to me today and got all of the large patterns printed on their special printers. There was a little problem because the iron-on paper wanted to stick to the press. (Opps!) But despite the problems, he got them all printed for me. I was also able to make several kits for each pattern with fabric form the Quilting Station in Pace, Florida. Ellen was so sweet in helping me get the fabrics pulled and ready. I will pack the quilts tonight. The Fear-less Curves program is one of my favorites to give because I love piecing curves.

Here are pictures of the quilts that we got patterns ready for. Hopefully very soon in the future we will have the on-line store ready for the patterns and other fun stuff.

I also am getting quilts ready to send to the GSQA Quilt Show this weekend. I picked up my wholecloth quilt that had been hanging at Derrell’s in Pensacola and decided that the binding MUST be fixed. It is a large quilt! Last night Emilie and I got it all ripped off. I trimmed it and sewed it back on- now just the hand sewing part. At least have most of the day on Friday to get it done.

Busy Spring

Sorry, no posts in a long time but it is spring. I wish I could say that it is because I have been busy with spring cleaning but it is really the opposite. The flowers are all starting to bud up and I would much rather be outside working in the garden. It has been this way since I was a girl. I would go outside and work in the garden instead of doing housework. Thankfully, I have a daughter that prefers inside work and would rather clean bathrooms than weeding.

I also have had the distraction of a wonderful camping trip with the family. I was afraid that I would not be able to sit still for 2 days – I did not take any projects with me – but I did it!

We also have a new addition to the family – a velveteen rabbit named Rabiseuraus Rex – Rex for short.

Baby Aaron’s quilt is finally ready to be shipped off. (He is my newest nephew.) Of course, he is already smiling and cooing – but late is better than never.

I also have been working on a new lecture on color. I will be presenting it to the Pensacola Quilter’s Guild in June and then again in July to the Santa Rosa Quilt Guild. I challenged myself to make a small quilt from each of the main color groupings. I was going to try to make the same quilt in at least 4 color ways but discovered I really only like the Analagous color way and had to change up the design for some of the others. I will post some pictures of them when they are done. I probably will only have the tops done for the first program but hopefully will have them all quilted later this summer.

Spring

I have been having such a wonderful spring. I always get the urge to get outside this time of year. The sewing suffers but the garden is looking great. Half of it weeded and mulch coming soon. We sent the last few night camping – yes, in tents. Despite a child puking, sunburn and eating hot dogs (since we did not catch any fish), we had a wonderful time.

I am busy preparing for my new “adventure”. I have decided to start a summer sewing program for 8-11 year olds. I am really excited about this and the class is filling up. I think I may need to buy 3 instead of 2 sewing machines. (Oh bummer!) Can one really have too many machines?

My sewing goal the next month is to finish up some projects that have been sitting in my incomplete pile. Today I quilted small quilt, made the binding for it and got one side sewed on. I also put binding on 3 other quilts that have been waiting for some time. (One of the quilts, I had to replace the binding on that my son had worn out.)

Here is a sneak peak at the drawing for my next project. It is based on a picture of an African Iris from my garden. I have been busy doing the quilting for my show quilts for the past few months and now am going through “piecing” withdraw. Hopefully, I will start the process of dyeing or finding fabrics for this project soon.

“In Her Arms” got a 2nd place. (It is hard competing against yourself. Both of my large curved pieced quilts ended up in the same category.)

“Serenity” – my fairy quilt got a 3rd in the art quilt category.

“Hummingbirds in my Garden” – the whole cloth quilt got a 3rd place.

The Pensacola Quilter’s Guild show week has begun. The quilts were all turned in yesterday and I am hoping everyone got their’s done. We are going to have over 200 judged quilts! I have entered 4 quilts. Two of the quilts are new the other 2 were made the year before.

I am hoping to be part of the judging process on Monday. We start setting up on Wednesday. We are going to have an official “ribbon-cutting” Thursday night at the preview. I will enjoy seeing the quilts that night – the rest of the show I will be in the classroom. Emilie has the last part of the week off school so she can help and enjoy being part of the madness. (That is one of the many joys of home-schooling.)

Here are pictures of the quilts that I entered.

Show time

I have finished the quilts for the Pensacola Quilter’s Guild Show that is being held February 26-28th. The quilts have to be turned in next week – so cutting it a little close. I am looking forward to reading the judges comments – good or bad. We have a national judge coming in for the show – Scott Murkin. The large shows that I enter in do not have the opportunity (time) for comments, so I am going to make good use of anything he takes time to say. He actually was one of the judges at the show I entered “In Her Arms” into last summer.

My next project is putting together a lecture on color – one of my favorite topics. I am hoping to get several small sample quilts made for it. I will post pictures of my progress.

I am also brain-storming for my next big quilt. I am thinking it will be of a butterfly but am having a hard time with what technique to use – curved piecing or fibers. Maybe I will have to do one of each!

Mark and I have a great appreciation for good food and enjoy finding new restaurants. We went to a new place in Pensacola that just opened this week. It is a “Chinese Bistro”. I was expecting a nice place because I had peeked in the windows before it was opened and noticed the cool wall treatments and elegant decorations. The service and the food was excellent. We started with a tuna appetizer – very lightly seared. WOW! I would have been content with that. We each had a different bowl of soup – I had the hot and sour soup and it was the best I had ever had. Mark had a vegetable stir-fry with shiitake mushrooms and bok choy. I had the lo mein noodles with stir-fry vegetables. The food was so hot and very tasty. I think we have found a new favorite to add to our elite list.

I have been working on my next show quilt and actually see the end in sight. I figure it will take close to 30 hours to quilt by the time I am done. I took a chance and used a black polyester batting for this quilt and am having a little trouble with pucker on the top. I am telling my that it is just “adding texture”. We will see what the judge thinks about it. Here is a picture of the quilting on the back of the quilt.

I have the backing and batting ready for my next project. I will be starting the quilting on my curve-pieced lily hopefully this weekend. I am a little tentative about it because I bought a batik for the backing and a black polyester batting. I am following , “you never know until you try”, but this is really hard to do this on a contest quilt.

I can not believe November is gone and December is well under way. I have been working with deadlines on several projects and have neglected to post anything. My goal for the seven children’s quilts by Thanksgiving (for Christmas presents for a family in need) was met with the help of two other quilters. They are at the embroider’s to get the kids names put on them permanently. I will post pictures as soon as I get them back. It was so much fun to work on this project.

I also have been working on quilts for the 2010 PQG quilt show. I am happily working on another quilter’s quilt.
Speaking at the GSQA meeting

I spent last weekend in Metairie, Louisiana (just outside New Orleans). I had the opportunity to give my “Fear-less Curves” lecture to a wonderful quilting group. It was such a wonderful weekend. My parents flew down and stayed with the kids, so Mark got to travel with me. We ate wonderful food and enjoyed the scenery. We even got to take a walk along the lake in the morning.

My dear friend Sandy, was my opening act. She brought several of her quilts that were more traditional – such as the fan and wedding ring patterns as well as her newer curved designs. She is such an encouragement to me and helps me to get over my nerves.

Thank you to my friend Cena for inviting me to speak. I had such a good time.

Whole cloth hummingbird and flower - new project

I have started quilting on a new project. I have done several small (18-24 in) whole cloth quilts and it pushed me to do a large quilt. I hand-dyed the fabric for the top and did some trapunto work. It is now sandwiched and the quilting is started. The fabric is a red-pink color with some brown in it. The thread is a brown rayon – it is showing up really nice. The small stipple work is much smaller than I have ever done before. I am using a #12 top-stitch needle in this project instead of my usual #14 quilting needle and it is doing great.

Burned motor

I had to take my beloved Bernina sewing machine to the shop for repairs yesterday. It had been acting up and then it started squealing – that is never a good thing. The diagnosis was a burned up motor. I had used it all up. I was scared to hear what the damage was going to be – but it ended up being under $100 dollars to have it fixed!! Boy, was I ever thankful.

I also got the verse quilt completed. I am really happy how it turned out. I used the scripture verses form Numbers 6:24-26. The quilting was done in a variegated thread that blended nicely with the fabrics so the script does not show up very much.

I am working on a new quilt. Actually, it is a quilt top that I have had done for at least 2 years and I could not decide how to quilt it. This week I found out that a friend of ours from church has recurrent cancer. I decided that this quilt will be his. It ended up that I already had the backing and thread. I even had a piece of batting big enough. The center of the quilt is quilted with some verses and the border is going to have a new feather design. The curve of the feather is based on a dinner plate.

Sometimes the best way to work on a project is to step away from it. I have hit a spot in my latest large project that has made me stop and I will have to re-work things before proceeding. A lot of times I just jump in and do it, but then wish I had taken a little time away. So, in order to refresh myself and give the quilt time to rest, I will go to the beach. There is nowhere else that refreshes me as well. The surf was nice and flat today – great for walking, swimming and finding shells. You never know what ideas may come to you while you are sitting enjoying the sound of the waves.

New projects

I completed the border for my class sample this week. I am thinking of putting a few hummingbirds on it still – we will see. I have also been working on a new feather quilting design- so I may just go with that. So many choices!!! I really like the border of this quilt – you can hardly tell that the center started out as 4 blocks. Pulling the design into the border softened the design.

I also have been working on a new paper-pieced design. This is 4 blocks put together. The single block finishes at 4 inches. The only thing that I did not think about with the design is the number of points that meet when the blocks are joined together. Wow-what a lump. I certainly will be quilting around it instead of thought it!

My quilt, “In Her Arms” did not place this week at Knoxville. I was very disappointed but it will help me think about trying in shows that feature more artistic quilts instead of traditional.

I am doing a curves class on Friday and thought that I would start another small sample. The center is 4 of the same blocks rotating around the center. I was going to just put a tradition straight border on it and then started thinking about continuing the drawing all around the border. Here is the center block with one of the borders. I wanted to piece one of them to make sure I liked it – before investing the time into all 4 and then not liking it. Hopefully, I will have enough fabric for all 4 sides – they are all fat-quarters.

Video review - Complex Cloth

I have been watching videos lately instead of getting a lot of sewing done, but I am learning soooo much. I am planning on dying the fabric for my next large quilt and have been doing some research on it to get ready. I have done some small pieces in the past but I will need at least 20 yards!!! I started watching Complex Cloth by Jane Dunnewold tonight and I can not wait to get started. She presents it in such a way that it seems possible and even fun. I have only made it thru half of the video but have learned enough to last me several months.

Marbling Fabric with Shaving Cream

My daughter and I spent the afternoon marbling fabric. I had heard of a technique that used shaving cream as the suspension for the paint. We had so much fun!!!

First you start with a work surface. We covered the table with craft paper and then used the shiny side of a large piece of freezer paper. The foam shaving cream is sprayed onto the freezer paper – a little larger than the size of your piece of fabric.

Loving Florida / New Projects

I am really enjoying the weather lately. We had a couple of rainy days but for the most part it has been beautiful. I love being able to go to the beach in the evenings. The water is still really cold- under 60 – but the kids seem immune to the cold. There is nothing more soothing then the wind and the sound of the waves crashing. It relaxes me and then my mind starts “creating”.

This is the start of my Challenge quilt for the Pensacola Quilter’s Guild. The challenge is that the quilt must be a circle (12-40 inches in diameter) and it must contain at least 3 things that were in a grab bag. The items in the grab bag ranges from fabric, netting, organza, sequins, beads , etc.

The technique for this quilt was presented at one of the guild meetings last year. All of the accent fabrics have bugs in them. This quilt was made entirely from fabrics in my stash – all I had to buy was the batting. It was fun to use all of the bug fabrics.

Ramblings

A few months ago a quilting friend passed around a survey that asked, “What part of quilting do you like the best?” 1. Design and color 2. Construction 3. Quilting 4. Finishing. This was really difficult for me because I really like everything except the construction. I know – this is the main part of making the quilt!

When I was new to quilting, each pattern/block was new to me and challenged me. Not to say that I have tried it all, but I realized about 2 years ago that I really dislike piecing the same thing over-and-over again (even if the end result is going to be spectacular). This became very evident to me as I worked on my New York Beauty quilt – “Evening in Times Square”. I could feel myself tensing up every time I sat down to work on all of those paper-pieced points. My lack of passion and interest in piecing that quilt shows itself in some “precision” piecing areas. My last quilt show judge noted some of these problems and I couldn’t agree more. Yes, I loved the design process and enjoyed the quilting, but the piecing took away the “joy”.

I rediscovered the “joy” of piecing while working on “In Her Arms”. I haven’t had so much fun working on a project in some time. I found that piecing the curves is challenging and interesting as each shape has it’s own challenges. It is also a more serendipitous method, as you are not completely sure how it will look until it is completely done.

"In Her Arms"

This has been a busy couple of months while I have been focused on a specific quilt. I usually have a couple of projects in the works at the same time and get a break from them, but I had a very specific deadline for this quilt. I started cutting the pieces in November and started the quilting in January. I really enjoyed each stage of this project but I have the say the time quilting was still my favorite.

This is the biggest project that I have designed on my own. The idea was a drawing I did about a year ago. Thanks to Mark and his technical genius, I got an enlarged pattern which was wonderful to work from. He even let me pin it to the living room wall for 3 months while I was constructing it. The family all thinks the wall looks bare now that it is down. I really liked that I was not exactly sure what the quilt would look like when it was done. I had planned out the color scheme and had a color drawing to work from but in each shape there are multiple smaller shapes which were drawn in as I came to each unit. I only had to tear out one piece and replace it! The quilting really changed the look of the quilt for me. I used one color for each major section – which seamed to pull all of the pieces back into one unit. I used about 10 different colors of threads for the quilting. The backing is a dark black/blue hand-dyed fabric. I matched the top and the bobbin thread, so there is “back art”. I like this technique because it helps prevent tension issues and it looks cool.

I tried a new technique for squaring up the quilt top. (after quilting and before putting on the binding) I laid the quilt on the tile floor in the dining room and taped the straight top edge along the straight line of the tiles. Mark helped me set up the T-square and the laser level. I cut along the edge – the red light of the laser guiding my scissors. After the binding was on, I put a large sheet on the carpet and sprayed the quilt top with a squirt bottle. I pinned the corners after measuring across the diagonal of the quilt to make sure it is square. This should help the quilt hang square and flat.

I am having the appraisal this week and then I hope to be able to submit it to the AQS Knoxville quilt show. I so hope it gets accepted.

First machine quilting workshop

I had my first machine quilting workshop yesterday with 20 students and it went great. A quilting guild in Navarre Florida invited me to come and teach. ( Cool and freaky at the same time.) Up until yesterday, the most students I had in a class was 10 so I was a little concerned that I would not be able to give everyone the attention they needed. Thankfully a good friend offered to come with me for the day. She helped get everything set up, answer questions and even did a little first-aid. I know it went smoother for me because of her help. I am so thankful for good friends.

I also have been making good progress quilting my “secret” quilt. I have over 20 hours in quilting done and hopefully only about 5-6 more. I get asked a lot about the time it takes to quilt a project, so I have been logging my time. I figured it took about 120 hours to piece it.

Secret Project

I have been working hard on my next big quilt and haven’t taken time to blog. I am spending anywhere for 4-6 hours a day on it if I can. (for the past month) I only have 2 more seams to piece and then the quilting. I often have problems working on a project so quickly because the process of coming up with the perfect quilting design is often time consuming and difficult. I have an April 1st deadline so no time for slacking.

I moved my small sewing machine into the house in the corner of the living room so that I can spend time with the family will I am doing the piecing. It will be out to the studio and my special table for the quilting.

This past week we had a great program given by Cena at the Pensacola Quilter’s Guild night meeting. It was on a “no curved piecing Drunkard’s Path”. It was so neat that I had to try it this week. I am using orange background pieces and the center will be an assortment of bugs.

I learned a valuable lesson in doing this project. You really should use diluted liquid starch instead of the concentrate. Full strength is like wall paper paste and does all kinds of yucky things to your iron, ironing board and dryer. So next time I will use it diluted!!!!!

I was going to have Emilie help me with this project but—Nana and Papa were visiting for Thanksgiving and on top of that they got the kids a Wii for Christmas. Needless to say, all interaction with me by the kids since then is only in relation to games on the Wii.

Machine Quilting Program

Today I did a new program for the Pensacola Quilter’s Guild on machine quilting. I had done a program about 1 year ago for the night chapter so I had to develop a new version for those who attend both the day and night chapter. This new program deals more with design and some of the basic supplies needed. It also has a power point presentation that displays quilting designs.

The program lasted bout 1 1/2 hours but about 20 minutes or so was answering questions. It was great having the program so interactive. I also had with me about 20 quilts that I have done over the last 5-7 years. Two of the quilts have been juried into AQS shows (2007, 2008).

Mark helped me with the power point presentation and we ended up with about 40 slides. He does such a good job and it sure makes me look good!

I also got to show my completed fairy quilt which I named “Serenity”.

Emilie requested a new room decor for her birthday, so I have been hard at work. I made her a new quilt which she designed. She even picked out the fabrics. She let me choose my own quilting designs. This is the first time that I have used the cotton/bamboo batting and I really liked it. It is lighter weight than the cotton and very soft. She wanted something a little bit lighter than the cotton and I think that it will be a very good weight for her.

Book review - "Nature's Studio" by Joan Colvin

I just read a wonderful book! Nature’s Studio by Joan Colvin is amazing. I really enjoyed her style of writing as well as her quilts. A friend let me borrow it for a few days – I am going to have a hard time giving it back to her. This is a book that I will probably get for my own library. It gives you ideas for getting started on fiber art quilts and has really good illustrations and photographs.

This is a small quilt I made after reading and getting some design instruction. The first image is a photograph Mark and Logan took on their recent camping trip. Aren’t the trees neat. The other images are my interpretation of the photo in a quilt.

Toad thread sketch

Here is my latest project. It is only 18 inches. I used thread sketching for the toad and the lily pads. The background pieces were cut free-form and laid on a muslin backing and then secured with a zig-zag stitch. The thread sketch was then added with a satin stitch securing it. The machine quilting was done with a mono-filament thread. The edging was done with multiple strands of yarns.

Nashville 2008 trip

Well we made it up to Nashville in 7 hours. My whole family went with me. I was not able to go with Jen and my Mom due to “life” getting in the way. I was able to go to the show for about 4 hours on Friday afternoon. I got through most of the quilts before my camera died and then hit the booths. It is amazing how much you can get through if you are under time constraints. I did make it to my favorite booth with their awesome hand-dyed fabrics. I will try to find their name and get it up soon. Mark and the kids came with me the second day. The kids really enjoyed seeing all the quilts plus the beautiful Opryland Hotel. We only had 2 hours there on Saturday due to the bad weather back home. We did not want to be driving into tropical storm “Fay” at night.

My best find were some beautiful hand-dyed fabrics that had been rusted. I spent a long time looking through all of their fabrics. I am really looking forward to using these special fabrics in an art quilt project.

My favorite quilts were, mine of course, and the art quilts. There was a special display of art quilts that all had to represent currency ($) in some form. Wow!! They were great.

My quilt did not win any awards this time – but there is always next year. I was really excited to have my quilt hanging. I was fun for me to have some of my friends “offended” that I had not won. I sure seem to need an ego boost every now and then.

Garden lizard thread sketch

I have been working this week on getting a new class sample done. I am going to be teaching a thread sketching class in September and it is always good to have a sample at the shop for people to see. I had wanted to do a lizard for my son-who is in love with anything reptile. I found a really cool photograph of a lizard and asked the photographer’s permission to use his image to make my sketch. He was kind enough to say yes. I have done several thread sketches but this is by far my favorite. It is going to look great on the wall. Only the top is done now, it needs a lot of embellishment yet.

I tried something different to make the lizard shape stand out. I used organza on the top and cut away the extra around the shape before doing the thread work for the leaves and the tree trunk.

The pictures are the rough sketch that Mark helped me with, a close up and the completed quilt top.

I can’t believe how quickly this summer is going. The trips to Indiana are over and only 3 weeks until school starts again. Both myself and the kids are feeling sad about that. I had hoped to get so much more done. But instead of piecing quilts, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach quilting classes at least 2 times a month most of the summer. This has been so much fun for me to do. It also helps me to see new things and a new way of communicating what I love about quilting.

I have finished the last minute details for my Nashville show quilt and will be sending it off tomorrow. I was unsure if I was going to be able to make the trip, but everything seems to be working out so that I can go up the last day.
Trying new things

I got started on this small art quilt at my mom’s house during a week of vacation. It combines several fun and new techniques – using a silk tie, organza, felting couching and my favorite, new beading techniques. It was a lot of fun to do.

Here are a few of my other fun art quilt projects. I am hanging them in groups under the shelves in my dining room. I brings me joy to see them hanging there.

This was made from acrylic felt and organza. I got the idea from a “Quilting Arts” magazine and came up with my own design for the flower. You use a heat tool to melt away the excess organza and felt to leave the fun design. The edges are couched with yarns.

A friend of mine knitted the background of this piece for me. The organza and the yarn were needle felted into a background cotton fabric with batting. The hummingbird base is angelina fibers and secured with thread painting. It was then meander quilted with a mono-filament thread.

This image is a close up of a thread painted piece that features several areas of dense bead work. It makes me think of a flower that has gone to seed and how beautiful even the end of things can be.

We had such a good week!

Monday evening I presented a machine quilting program to the Pensacola Quilter’s Guild. I think I talked for about 1 1/2 hours but could have gone much longer. I have so much fun talking about quilting and showing some of the fun things I have been able to do with it. My mom was able to come with me to the meeting.

Mom and I had fun trying some non-traditional things this week. She made a really cool piece of fabric using muslin for the base, then elmers white glue to adhere tissue paper and a few vinca flowers from the garden. The end result was very cool and flexible enough to stitch through. I discovered that you can stamp and emboss directly on fabric – a very cool effect. The embossing heat tool can also be used to burn organza!

We also made a very non-traditional dinner on Thanksgiving day. With an abundance of fresh seafood from the Gulf, we had shrimp, fish and crab claws. We are making the Turkey this week. :)

What a busy few weeks. I have been working on samples for my November Guild Meeting program on Machine quilting. I think all the samples are done. Now I just have to organize my thoughts! This is no laughing matter.

I also have been working on the PQG Quilt show ribbons for this next March. I know it sounds like a long time away, but not when there are 120 to do and I pick a really time consuming design. On the positive side, I have needed and have recaived a lot of help. It has been so much fun getting together in small groups and talking – I mean working ion getting them done. If I ever get volunteered for this again, I will either advise buying them or I will design something that does not require hours of paper-piecing.

Curves

I had the opportunity last week to speak at the Pensacola Quilters’s Guild meeting. For the past year I have been the Program director (VP) for the night meeting and several months ago presented a lecture on curved piecing and design. The day meeting VP asked me to do my program again for the day group. The program seemed to go over well at both meetings. This past year has definitely stretched me – I am not a public speaker! I would much rather teach a small group (10) something hands-on than to stand up in front of 90 people. Hopefully, I will have other similar opportunities in the future and it will get easier each time.

I sure had fun designing and making the samples. Here are some pictures of the quilts that went with the lecture.

This is a small quilt in which the 4 center squares are the same and have been machine pieced. I really enjoyed the quilting and embellishing with the crystals. I named it my “Bling” quilt.

This quilt features a more complex center using 4 similar blocks with a complex pieced border. I discovered while piecing this that I do not enjoy having to piece several difficult curves more than once!

This is a free-form drawing I used for one of the other samples. I really enjoyed piecing it.

This last picture is the work in progress.

September

I don’t even know where this month has gone. The kids all started school and projects piled up. I was able to take a trip to Indy for our 6th annual Quilt Show and Sale. Pictures will be available on the generations quilters web site in December. I left my camera up there so no new pictures until then.

I have made great progress on several projects including my entry for the 2008 Pensacola Quilters Guild show. Their theme this year is a New York Beauty block. I think I have gotten my fill of paper piecing for awhile. My husband helped me with the geometry needed for designing this original quilt. Now comes the fun part, planning the quilting.

I also have been trying out some thread painting. I guess that is a natural progression when you like doing heavy machine quilting. I saw some really neat pieces @ the AQS Nashville show and will enjoy sitting and trying it.

Nashville AQS show 2007

I just got back from the quilt show in Nashville. I got to spend 4 days with Mom, Jen and Holly. We had a wonderful time. It is so much fun to see other people’s reactions to the quilts. The vendors were really good and I found a lot of fun stuff (beads, fibers and threads). I also got to see a demonstration by a wonderful fiber artist. There were so many different things to see and try. My favorite part of the show was the Guild Challenge quilts. They really showed how each quilter views things different from each other but then how they all flow together.

Hopefully this week after all the laundry is caught up and the family is into the school routine, I can get back to some serious sewing. There is nothing like a quilt show to get the creative juices flowing. The problem is that there are so many unfinished projects lurking about. My goal for the next few weeks is to finish piecing my New York Beauty design that needs to pieced by October.

Class

I was able to teach my first machine quilting class this past week. It was mainly for beginners and went over the basics of batting, threads and the such. I had 5 students and we met for 4 hours. I really had a good time. The quilting is my favorite part of the whole quilt-making process, so it was fun to pass along to others what I have been learning over the past 9 years. I hope this is something I will be able to do on a more regular basis. The students all did so well; I am looking forward to seeing their progress over the next few months. We are planning to meet again in the future and play with more advanced stitches and design.

River Bed

This was my first attempt at an “art quilt”. I have been looking at a lot of different styles of art quilts and decided to try it. One day I came home from a stressful day at work (RN at a Clinic) and I just had to cut something. I decided the base would be 12 1/2 inches and just went from there. What fun!

I am also really enjoying doing some bead work. It is something I can do while Mark is working. I will say that my other 2 attempts with different ideas but the same sized base failed miserably!

Hummingbird Song

This is my first attempt at a whole cloth quilt. I really like the yellow fabric with the slightly darker orange thread. It is only 18 inches square. It is to be my donation for the Pensacola Quilters Guild Show- Silent Auction in March 2008.

Next time I will echo around the hummingbird shape a little more and not fill it in as much so the hummingbird will pop out like the flowers do. Overall I really like it.

Poppy

This quilt was started at least 1 1/2 years ago. It was my first attempt at needle turn applique. Both my mother and grandmother have beautiful appliqued quilts. I do not know if I will do it very often but it was fun to try. The poppies were sewn together before appliqued. I really enjoyed quilting this quilt because of all the open spaces. The poppy idea came from my mother’s flower bed- the poppies are my favorite.

I also enjoyed working with the different colors in the quilt and tried to give it a color wheel effect. I think the change in color helps move your eye around the quilt as well as the hummingbird.

It was so much fun trying some new quilting ideas. I have been reading some of Diane Gaudynski’s books and am so impressed with her creativeness. My favorite right now is Quilt Savvy by AQS, Gaudynski’s Machine Quilting Guidebook.

Tops and more tops

I am really bad about finishing projects. I say it is because the quilting design has to “come to me” before a quilt gets quilted, but honestly I usually have a new project in mind that has to get started. Well this month I am planning on getting some of those tops quilted. I am working on a Poppy applique quilt that I finished last summer. I think I have had plenty of time to think about the quilting! What is really great is that I have been pushing myself in expanding my designs and stepping out to try new things. I am really enjoying it, although I am finding myself out of shape. I guess with all the piecing and small quilts I have been working on, the muscles I usually use for quilting are quite out of shape.

Midnight

This is the project that the web site design was based on. This original design was way out of the box for me. We are having a challenge in our Qulit Guild in Pensacola. The quilt had to be 36 inches square, use 1 inch of the blue theme fabric and fit the theme “Blues”. The quilt uses several techniques – curved piecing, tolle, couching, and hand beading. I will post my progress as it develops.
